Cist 2026

Developed over a year of site-specific research on Dartmoor, Cist uses 3D scan data from a ‘cist’ or burial chamber discovered in Bellever, Dartmoor at the centre of a narrative based on both archaeological evidence and speculative storytelling.

Cist centres the voice of human remains lying in a burial chamber for thousands of years, experiencing the world above them change.

Around 90% of cists have their long sides orientated in a NW/SE direction, with archaeologists theorising that this was in order for the head to align with the summer solstice sunrise and the feet to align with the winter solstice sunset.
